DAY 2: FOCUS ON GOD’S CHARACTER
October 1, 2018
“You can do more than pray after you have prayed, but you cannot do more than pray until you have prayed. Pray often, for prayer is a shield to the soul, a sacrifice to God, and a scourge to Satan.”
- John Bunyan
Praying God’s Character
Allow Psalm 111 to be your prayer guide today. Begin by reading the Psalm through three times. First silently, next softly, and then out loud. Using the Psalm, tell God what the Psalm tells you about Him, His character, His being, His works, His promises, His purposes and plans.
Praise the Lord!
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,
in the company of the upright, in the congregation.
2 Great are the works of the Lord,
studied by all who delight in them.
3 Full of splendor and majesty is his work,
and his righteousness endures forever.
4 He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered;
the Lord is gracious and merciful.
5 He provides food for those who fear him;
he remembers his covenant forever.
6 He has shown his people the power of his works,
in giving them the inheritance of the nations.
7 The works of his hands are faithful and just;
all his precepts are trustworthy;
8 they are established forever and ever,
to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.
9 He sent redemption to his people;
he has commanded his covenant forever.
Holy and awesome is his name!
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
all those who practice it have a good understanding.
His praise endures forever!
Praying God’s Character in Me
Identify something that resists worshipping God’s for who He is as described in the Psalm - something that makes it difficult to praise Him. Bring that before the Lord by telling Him that you choose praise, by faith, because God is worthy, always worthy of praise.
Praying God’s Character for UCC
Pray that UCC would grow in our knowledge and understanding of who God is and that His character would be formed in us. To this end pray:.

for the ministry activities at UCC, such as small groups, Sunday services, and age / gender specific ministries to be God-centered.
for the pastors and leaders of UCC to deepen their relationship with God and to mature in their character.
