DAY 3: FOCUS ON GOD’S CHARACTER

October 1, 2018

“We must learn to measure ourselves, not by our knowledge about God, not by our gifts and responsibilities in the church, but by how we pray and what goes on in our hearts. Many of us, I suspect, have no idea how impoverished we are at this level. Let us ask the Lord to show us.”

- J.I. Packer

Praying God’s Character

Allow Psalm 46 to be your prayer guide today. Begin by reading the Psalm through three times. First silently, next softly, and then out loud. Using the Psalm, tell God what the Psalm tells you about Him, His character, His being, His works, His promises, His purposes and plans.

Psalm 46

God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change
And though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea;
3 Though its waters roar and foam,
Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. Selah.

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
The holy dwelling places of the Most High.
5 God is in the midst of her, she will not be moved;
God will help her when morning dawns.
6 The nations made an uproar, the kingdoms tottered;
He raised His voice, the earth melted.
7 The Lord of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah.

8 Come, behold the works of the Lord,
Who has wrought desolations in the earth.
9 He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth;
He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;
He burns the chariots with fire.
10 “Cease striving and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah.

A Model Prayer

We often learn to pray by hearing others pray. Today, use this prayer from Richard Foster. After reading it through slowly go back and use it as a prayer of your own using some of the language from Psalm 46.

“O most high, glorious God, how great is my dilemma! In Your awful presence silence seems best. And yet, if I keep my peace, the rocks themselves will cry out. But if I do speak, what will I say?

It is Love that calls forth my speech, though it still feels like stammering. I love you, Lord God. I adore you. I worship you. I bow down before you.

Thank you for your gifts of grace:
—the consistency of the sunrise and sunset,
—the wonders of color,
—the solace of voices I know.

I magnify you, Lord. Let me see your greatness—to the extent that I can receive it. Help me bow in your presence in endless wonder and ceaseless praise. In the name of Him whose adoration never failed. —Amen.”

Richard Foster, from Prayer: Finding the Heart's True Home

Praying God’s Character for UCC

Now use the last line fo the prayer to pray for for UCC to grow in understanding of God’s character exchanging the “I” for “we” etc. Pray this through a few times:

'“I (We, UCC) magnify you, Lord. Let me (us) see your greatness—to the extent that I (we) can receive it. Help me (us) bow in your presence in endless wonder and ceaseless praise. In the name of Him whose adoration never failed —Amen.”
