Day 5: Currently 1 person fasting on this day

The Lord’s Prayer

“The attention at the beginning of these petitions is on the exaltation of God and His concerns. In the initial phrases of the Lord's Prayer, Jesus fixes our gaze not on ourselves but on God.”

- R.C. Sproul (on the Lord’s Prayer)

Matthew 6:9-13

“This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’

Praying Through the Lord’s Prayer for UCC

Today you will use the Prayer Jesus taught His disciples to pray, The Lord’s Prayer, to guide your prayers for UCC.

We will follow Martin Luther’s advice in praying the Lord’s prayer who suggests we begin by simply reading and praying through the prayer once.

Next he suggests to go back through the prayer and pray each petition individually, for example:

  • Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

  • Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Luther exhorts us to let each petition become our prayer. So, before moving on to the next phrase turn in back to God as a prayer. For example after praying “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name” we continue to pray something like:

“Yes, Father, it is our great desire at UCC that your name would be kept holy, honoured. That in all things we would lift up the name of you Son Jesus Christ whom you gave to save us from your wrath being poured out upon our sin by taking it upon Himself at the cross.”

Pray this way for UCC until you reach “Amen” which Luther advises us not to dismiss as a simple prayer ending. Rather, he exhorts us to make a bold, powerful, and confident “Amen.”

Tonight UCC will host a Lord’s Prayer themed Prayer & Praise night from 18:00-20:00 at the Helsinki Congregation location (Annankatu 7). All are welcome. Would you considering attending? Telling other about the event? Praying for it?
